Merlin is owned by 81 year-old Olympic gold medallist and America’s Cup yachtsmanDavid Forbes OAM, who campaigns his boat in the CYCA’s Ocean Pointscore Series (OPS) and the Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Race in which he finished 17th overall and third in Division 2 last year. Minus Forbes, Merlin contested the 2014 Rolex Sydney Hobart and finished 16th overall and fourth in Division 2, having the distinction of being the best placed yacht of 50 feet and over – not bad for a 15 year-old yacht. Forbes will miss this race too, leaving Joseph Earl to skipper his yacht.
