Lake Macquarie always fields a strong contingent for the Gold Coast race, and Close Halled was among the four yachts representing ‘The Lake’ in last year’s race. Graeme Hall has contested the last four races to the Gold Coast, last year skippering his yacht to 34th overall and ninth in Division 3 against a tough divisional field, including fellow Beneteau 40’s and Sydney 38’s. Hall, a past Lake Macquarie Yacht Club commodore, is aiming for better things for this year. If conditions are favourable, the successful Beneteau 40’s will come into their own. The design has won many major ocean races in the past, including this race, which Brannew, a Beneteau First 40, won in 2013.
