The weather turned more westerly and more close to the 30/35 knots than the champagne sailing promised by the weather bureau, but adding a second reef around 2am made it more manageable.

It is a record yelled Geoff with an excited voice we just touched 14.8 knots as I am coming up the companion way!

It soon was clear that sailing under full main and a number 2 headsail was getting far too exciting. An attempt to put two reefs in was frustrated by the reef lines having got stuck around the boom. With some luck and a lot of effort the line was free and one reef was in. Reducing the headsail also helped. It was midnight and we were approaching Port Stephens.

Earlier we had watched with stupor Zephyr turning around under motor, we then learned they had a broken backstay.

The weather turned more westerly and more close to the 30/35 knots than the champagne sailing promised by the weather bureau, but adding a second reef around 2am made it more manageable.

The swell coming on the back port side was quite challenging at times, but Joanne's cooking kept all in good stead.

We are now off Sugarloaf Point (about 4nm south), wind is 30 knots and speed around 8-10 knots.

The last four hours have been quite wet so we look forward to the sun coming up.

From Plus 16 all is well.
