The Ingles Sydney Gold Coast Race has a new leader following Skandia’s retirement early this morning.

A very disappointed Grant Wharington, the skipper of Skandia and one of the four crewmen competing in the Etchells World Championships that starts at midday today at Mooloolaba, made the heart wrenching decision to give up what would have been his 26th consecutive line honours win when overnight, the boat couldn’t meet the required speed to finish the 384 nautical mile race and make the start of the World Championship.

The 98-footer is currently motoring to Ballina where the four crew will be taken off the boat at around 7.00am this morning and transported to a fixed wing aircraft.

Stewart Thwaites' Konica Minolta is the new race leader and at current speed, will cross the finish line off Main Beach at Southport late this afternoon.
