The end of the spinnaker pole on Luna Park Sydney has exploded and the crew is putting together a makeshift pole with the pieces that are left.
Ludde Ingvall is currently affecting repairs on his 80-footer Luna Park Sydney having blown a spinnaker pole while parallel with Sean Langman’s Grundig in first place on line honours in the Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, which started at 1.00pm this afternoon in Sydney Harbour.
“We were doing 18 knots of boat speed and the end of the spinnaker pole exploded,” said Ludde by telephone this afternoon, sailing off Newcastle (1600hours).
“It’s a long way to go with this problem. We are currently flying the spinnaker off the bow, which is very difficult given the current wind angle, and we are making emergency repairs with the pieces that are left.
“We will try and get back in the game with a makeshift pole,” the disappointed skipper said.
Ludde reported that the winds had eased this afternoon to 18 knots from the southwest and that he was a mile and a half astern of Grundig with Broomstick (Wallace/Cranitch) a mile behind him in third place.
