Changes in handicap places as winds ease

Home 2003 Changes in handicap places as winds ease

news

One of the smaller boats the 2003 Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, Pendragon,  has jumped to provisional first place on corrected time in the IMS class as last night’s strong winds continue to ease along the New South Wales North Coast.

Based on latitude and longitude positions reported to Penta Comstat radio base at 7am,  Pendragon, a Stewart 34 skippered by Andrew Cochrane,  was in IMS first place ahead of veteran Syd Fischer’s Farr 50, Ragamuffin,  and two Victorian entrants,  Stratcorp Ninety Seven (Chris Dare) and Terra Firma (Nicholas Bartels).

Provisional first place on corrected time in the IRC class continues to be a duel between Broomstick,  Ray Wallace and Michael Cranitch’s Open 60,  and the fleet leader,  Sean Langman’s MBD 66,  Grundig.

However,  the former Hong Kong-based Mumm 36,  Corum,  skippered by Bill Wild from Queensland,  is pressing them hard  with the two Mumm 30s, Tow Truck (Anthony Paterson) from Lake Macquarie and Enigma (Steward Lewis) from Brisbane also coming into the handicap picture as the fleet races north.

In the PHS class,  Balmain Experience (Tony Williams) leads on progressive corrected time from UBS Wild Thing, skippered by CYCA Vice Commodore Geoff Lavis.  In third position is Farr Horizons (Ivan Resnekov).

The 12-boat Sydney 38 fleet continues to enjoy exciting one-design racing,  with Graham Gibson’s Hidden Agenda leading from Easy Tiger (Chris Way/Rob McWilliam), in sight astern,  and Wadadli (Gordon Ketelbey). Close astern of them at the 7am positions reports came Cuckoos Nest (Nigel Holman) and AMI Jade (Peter McNamara).

· At 10.10 hours today,  the CYCA’s yacht Tracker placed Grundig south of Evans Head and 77 nautical miles from the finish line.  Luna Park Sydney was 15 miles astern.
