Sticky spots holes to enjoy a great finish in the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race

Sticky is a beautiful Cookson 50 owned by Richard Harris. After they finished the race with a time of 2 days 12 hours and 24 minutes. We caught up with the young sailor Hugo Butterworth to chat about his first Southport race and their arrival off Main Beach at 1.24am in the early hours of Day 4.

CYCA: How was your trip north in Sticky – did you have a good race?

Hugo Butterworth: “It was a tough trip up for sure. We hugged the coast most of the way, we didn’t take the gamble like a lot of boats did, by going off shore and tacking really far out. We stayed right next to the coast and we stopped a couple of times at Hat Head and Byron, because he wind died out on us, and we started going backwards."

CYCA: Have you done this race before, how does it compare to other ocean races you have done?
HB: “It was my first Southport race personally. There were some tough times there, but eventually we got going again and we kind of trucked along the whole way and it was a good race I think.

CYCA: Tell me about your crew for the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast?
“Well there a couple of sail makers on board, professionals by trade, but we are all kind of mates on the boat. It’s a really kind of friendly environment on board, we are all there to have a really good time. And to have a good race overall.

CYCA: Are you happy with the time you made and your position?

HB: "Yeah we had a pretty good result I think. We were fourth in Div 0 IRC.”

CYCA: So is your whole crew from Sydney?
Yeah we are are from Sydney, and our navigator Mike Selbie did a really good job of getting us up the coast and though the shifty airs.

We congratulation Sticky on their great result, they are currently at number 11 overall.
