2022 RACE UPDATE | Wednesday 3 August - 0600hrs

David Myer's Beneteau First 40 Flying Cloud & Alex Seja & Felicity Nelson's Sydney 36 Supernova are closing in on the finish, passing Surfers Paradise with only a few miles remaining.

Shane Connelly's J/99 Rum Rebellion (TH), co-skippered by Tony Sutton, is not far astern.

They will be the 40th, 41st & 42nd to complete the race.

That will leave only seven boats still out on the racetrack: Mondo, Wild Oats, She's the Culprit, Crystal Cutter III, White Bay 6 Azzurro, Reve & Crux (TH).

Mondo heads these, 13NM out from Southport. The tail have just over 30 miles to go & are currently sailing off Cape Byron at 3-4kts in light offshore breeze which is predicted to go north later in the morning.

It was a slow struggle overnight.

Look out for our next updates after the Prizegiving at Southport Yacht Club, 1100hrs this morning.

2022 RACE UPDATE | Tuesday 2 August - 2000hrs

24 boats have arrived at Southport since this morning's overnight update, making a total of 36 to have completed the race. No further competitors have retired.

The two-handed entrant, Avalanche, is expected in shortly & will be followed by two other two-handers, Philosopher & Disko-Trooper_Contender Sailcloth who are sparring off Burleigh Heads.

It is a longer gap of 48NM back to the following group, lead by Flying Cloud, currently off Ballina. The last boats, Crux (TH), Reve & White Bay 6 Azzurro are back off Evans Head with over 70 miles to go.

It will be well into Wednesday before we see any of the remaining boats at the Gold Coast. The wind looks to lighten later tonight.

It's currently a 5-6kt E off Cape Byron but forecasts suggest that it could drop to 1-2kts around midnight before swinging into the west & remaining below 10kts until late afternoon.

2022 RACE UPDATE | Tuesday 2 August - 0600hrs

After the arrival of the 52s overnight, 14 boats have now finished: Andoo Comanche, Black Jack, Hamilton Island Wild Oats, Moneypenny, Whisper, No Limit, Ichi Ban, Gweilo, Patrice, Zen, Celestial, Quest, Smuggler & KOA.

The last of the 52s, Frantic, will likely be the next to finish after having started the race late. She is currently 42NM from the line, east of Cape Byron. That will then mean all maxis, mini-maxis & 52s are atop the line honours standings.

Sean Langman's RP69 Moneypenny looks likely to take out Overall victory but there are still 22 boats in contention.

ORCi standings has Moneypenny ahead of Hamilton Island Wild Oats & Tony Kirby's TP52 Patrice.

On PHS, Michael Rowe's Mumm 36 Norton White Corum currently leads Paul O'Rourke's Sydney 40 Mako & James Murchison's Hick 40 Avalanche (the first of the two-handed entrants).

With the fleet stretched from Cape Byron down to Coffs Harbour there's still a lot of race to go. Most boats are inside or on the rhumb line with only Ausreo testing the breeze further to sea. The wind is out of the west but will go south later in the day. It is fairly light with a maximum of 10kts & looks to be even softer tomorrow.

To date, there have been 12 retirees, the latest all due to time constraints.

Things are hotting up for tonight’s racing.

Andoo Comanche is back in the lead & is currently doing 13.6kts as she starts to head back towards the coast. 40NM SE of Yamba, she has 115NM to go the finish.

Black Jack continues her route closer in to shore & is 3 kts slower. Only 4.6NM behind Comanche & 15NM NE of North West Solitary Island, it will be interesting to see which strategy has paid off best when they begin to converge.

Hamilton Island Wild Oats has dropped back 11NM & is E of the Island sailing at a similar speed.

Six 52s are within 6 miles of each other: Gweilo, Ichi Ban, Zen, Patrice, Quest & Celestial, with Kia, Smuggler & Frantic following.

2022 RACE UPDATE | Sunday 31 July - 1400hrs

One day & an hour since the start. With just under 165NM to the finish off Main Beach, Southport, we’re seeing a few different tactical calls being made & it’s still an open race for Line Honours.

Black Jack has regained the lead from Andoo Comanche after being overtaken mid-morning but is currently a few knots slower - doing 9-10kts, 31 NM SE of South Solitary Island. Comanche is further out, back 50NM SE of South Solitary. Hamilton Island Wild Oats is 25 NE of Smoky Cape.

Not much change to the standings for the following groups. The gaps are just widening slightly.

The next few hours & overnight action will be very interesting.

To date, there have been two retirees: Shearwater due to radio problems; Pekljus with backstay ram issues.

Current standings:
IRC - Gweilo | Quest | Ichi Ban
ORCi - Moneypenny | Joss | White Bay 6 Azzurro
PHS - Reve | Mondo | Ciao Bella

2022 RACE UPDATE | Sunday 31 July - 0900hrs

20 hours in. Black Jack is approaching Crescent Head & still holding off Andoo Comanche & Hamilton Island Wild Oats but the two 100’ chasers are only a few miles back near Port Macquarie & are heating it up doing around 14kts.

With around 200NM to go, they’re paralleling the rhumb line on 20-30 degree headings & like most of the fleet, sailing in fast mode. Breeze is in the N/NW but looks to swing to NNE later on.

The three mini maxis are a bit further back currently doing 8-9 kts, with Moneypenny still leading Whisper & No Limit.

Further astern, you can throw a blanket over nine of the ten 52s with only 6NM between them. Gweilo now leads Ichi Ban & Quest. The group has risen to the top of IRC standings but it’s still anyone’s game for Overall Contention in all divisions.

Current standings:
IRC - Gweilo | Quest | Zen
ORCi - Moneypenny | Hamilton Island Wild Oats | Quest
PHS - Mako | Mondo | Reve

2022 RACE UPDATE | Sunday 31 July - 0400hrs

All three maxis are now outside the rhumb line after rounding Seal Rocks & have been achieving speeds of 12-13kts. They are currently in 7-8kts of NNW breeze & a 1.5m swell. 250NM to the finish.

2022 RACE UPDATE | Saturday 30 July - 1800hrs

Five hours after the start, the fleet is now progressing up the NSW coastline in inky darkness.

Black Jack is approaching Norah Head, one mile ahead of Hamilton Island Wild Oats with Andoo Comanche a further three miles astern.

They are currently doing around 7kts having previously been hitting 9-10kts. The first two boats seem to be staying close to shore up the Central Coast.

Black Jack had ventured out to the rhumb line near Collaroy but soon came back. No one in the fleet seems in a hurry to take on the current & the breeze does look promising closer in.

You can throw a blanket over the mini-maxis, Moneypenny, No Limit & Whisper four miles back & the pack of eight 52s are all together off Pittwater.

Current standings:
IRC - Quest | Black Jack | Zen
ORCi - Quest | Hamilton Island Wild Oats | Black Jack
